Yes. A matcha latte contains caffeine because matcha is powdered green tea. The most important factor is how many grams of matcha are used.
What determines the caffeine amount?
- The weight of matcha in the drink
- The specific tea and harvest
- Whether more than one matcha portion is used
Cup size alone is not enough to calculate caffeine. A 16 oz latte made with 2 grams of matcha can contain less caffeine than a 12 oz latte made with 4 grams. Milk, water and ice dilute flavor but do not remove caffeine.
Why exact numbers vary
Matcha is an agricultural product. Caffeine varies with cultivar, growing conditions, harvest and processing. Published averages are useful estimates, but laboratory testing is required for an exact value for a particular lot.
Tay Leaf’s latte standard
Our 16 oz starting formula uses 4 grams of matcha with 30 grams of 160°F water, combined with approximately 160 grams of milk or oat milk and ice. This is a flavor standard, not a universal caffeine recommendation.
If you are caffeine-sensitive
Use less matcha, drink it earlier, and consider all caffeine consumed that day. Pregnancy, medications and certain conditions can require advice from a healthcare professional.
