Matcha does not suddenly become unusable on one universal day, but its color, aroma and flavor decline after exposure to air, heat, light, moisture and strong odors.
Before opening
Keep sealed matcha in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. Follow the package date and the producer’s storage instructions.
After opening
Close the package tightly, minimize empty air, keep it dry and refrigerate it. Tay Leaf recommends refrigeration after opening.
Avoid condensation
If matcha is very cold, allow the sealed container to approach room temperature before opening. This reduces the chance of humid air condensing inside.
Signs of quality loss
- Dull olive or brown color
- Flat, dusty or cardboard-like aroma
- More pronounced bitterness
- Absorbed refrigerator or pantry odors
Buy for realistic usage
Smaller packages can preserve quality for home users. Cafés should track opening dates and rotate stock first-in, first-out.
