How to Brew Matcha Tea

Matcha is whisked rather than steeped. Follow a simple straight-matcha method with measured powder, controlled water and proper mixing.

Traditional bowl of whisked straight matcha tea

Matcha is not brewed like a tea bag. The powder is dispersed into water and consumed as part of the drink.

Simple straight-matcha recipe

  • 2 grams matcha
  • 60–80 grams filtered water
  • Water around 160°F to start
  1. Warm the bowl, then dry it completely.
  2. Sift the matcha.
  3. Add a small amount of water and mix into a smooth paste.
  4. Add the remaining water.
  5. Whisk rapidly until evenly dispersed and lightly foamy.
  6. Drink promptly before natural settling occurs.

Adjusting the cup

Use less water for a stronger bowl or more for a lighter one. If the tea tastes harsh, confirm the temperature and ratio before adding sweetener.

For lattes

Use a stronger base: 4 grams of matcha and 30 grams of 160°F water.
