Iced shaken matcha is one of the simplest ways to enjoy first-harvest matcha cold. Shaking disperses the tea, chills the drink quickly and creates a light layer of foam without milk or required sweetener.

Iced Shaken Matcha Recipe

Yield: One iced drink
Preparation time: Approximately 3 minutes
Sweetness: None required

Ingredients

  • 2 grams (about 1 tsp) Kyoto Teien matcha
  • 60 grams (about ¼ cup) filtered water at 160°F
  • 140 grams (about ⅝ cup) cold filtered water
  • Ice

Equipment

  • Digital scale
  • Fine-mesh sifter
  • Heat-safe cup or bowl
  • Sealed bottle or cocktail shaker

How to Make Iced Shaken Matcha

  1. Sift 2 grams (about 1 tsp) of matcha into a heat-safe cup.
  2. Add 60 grams (about ¼ cup) of water at 160°F.
  3. Whisk or froth until evenly dispersed.
  4. Add the matcha and 140 grams (about ⅝ cup) of cold water to a shaker filled with ice.
  5. Seal and shake briefly until cold and lightly foamed.
  6. Pour into a glass and serve immediately.

For Beginners at Home

A leakproof bottle works if you do not own a cocktail shaker. Leave enough empty space for the liquid and ice to move, confirm that the lid is secure and shake over a sink the first time.

Drink promptly. Some settling is natural because matcha is suspended rather than dissolved.

For Cafés

For a stronger 16 oz café version, use one complete 4-gram Tay Leaf Matcha Base, approximately 170 grams (about 1¼ cup ice) of cold filtered water and ice. Test the finished cup with the café’s exact ice and glassware, then document the approved build.

Adjusting the Flavor

Use less cold water for a more concentrated matcha flavor or more water for a lighter drink. A small amount of simple syrup can be added, but taste the unsweetened version first to experience Kyoto Teien’s natural sweetness and umami.

Why This Recipe Suits First-Harvest Matcha

The recipe contains no milk or strong flavoring, allowing Kyoto Teien’s vibrant color, mellow grassy aroma, natural sweetness, creamy character and rich umami to remain clear.
